Irina G. Axelrod-Angres, a staff attorney in the civil division of the Nevada Supreme Court, has been selected as the 2009-2010 Supreme Court Fellow assigned to the Federal Judicial Center.
The Supreme Court Fellows Program was created in 1973 by the late Chief Justice Warren E. Burger to provide promising individuals with a first-hand understanding of the federal government, in particular, the judicial branch. In the words of Chief Justice Roberts, the program offers “a unique opportunity for exceptional individuals to contribute to the administration of justice at the national level.”
Each year fellows work with top officials in the judicial branch of government. With assignments at the Supreme Court, the Federal Judicial Center, the Administrative Office of the U. S. Courts, and the U. S. Sentencing Commission, fellows have been involved in various projects examining the federal judicial process and seeking, proposing, and implementing solutions to problems in the administration of justice.
As the fellow at the Federal Judicial Center, Axelrod-Angres will provide assistance with the Center’s inter-judicial affairs programs. Her fellowship begins in the fall.
After obtaining her law degree, Axelrod-Angres clerked for Judge Peter I. Breen and James W. Hardesty (now Chief Justice Hardesty of the Supreme Court of Nevada) on the Second Judicial District Court in Reno, Nevada. Following her clerkships, she went into private practice where she focused on issues involving state and federal corporate law, family law, and employment law. Following private practice, Axelrod-Angres served as a staff attorney at the Nevada Supreme Court, where she drafted memorandums of law, orders, and opinions.
Axelrod-Angres earned a B.A. and an M.A. in linguistics from St. Petersburg State University in Russia, a B.A. in English and English literature from the Sierra Nevada College, and a J.D. from California Western School of Law in San Diego.
The Supreme Court Fellows are selected by a commission comprised of 9 members selected by the Chief Justice of the United States.
"My Supreme Court Fellowship remains one of the most meaningful times of my life. The opportunity to be part of a living history and to be at the epicenter of one of this nation’s most important and enduring institutions provided me a unique experience to both grow and learn lessons that serve me well today."
